Panel Urges Lung Cancer Scans for Millions of U.S. Smokers, Current and Former!
Certain current or former heavy smokers should start getting yearly scans for lung cancer to cut their risk of death from the nation’s top cancer killer, government advisers said Monday — even as they stressed that the tests aren’t for everyone.
The long-anticipated decision by the influential U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says these CT scans of the lungs should be offered only to people at especially high risk: Those who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or an equivalent amount, such as two packs a day for 15 years — and who are between the ages of 55 and 80. Cinderella Cares Foundation put the fun back in fundraiser this past April 26th at the Washington DC Riot Act Comedy club with their Comedy for the Cure 2012, this exciting fun filled event was held to benefit Lung Cancer Alliance and holy Cross Oncology. The evening started with Cinderella Salmon’s daughter,Sonia Salmon-Gayle sharing her mother’s message of joy and of reaching out to others. Emily Ayers of Lung Cancer Alliance informed us about their mission and its national outreach. Dr. Cheryl Aylesworth represented the Holy Cross Cancer Foundation and shared the good news about the programs they offer. Marilyn Martens gave a heartfelt message of hope from the perspective of a survivor.
The entertainment part of the evening began with LA comics Ian Salmon and Sarah Newell. The Kelly Bell Band got us all off our chairs and dancing in the aisles then, nationally known comic Tony Woods left us all laughing as the evening ended. Washington’s well-known Riot Act Comedy Theater is hosting the first Comedy for a Cure gala benefiting Holy Cross Hospital and Lung Cancer Alliance. The fundraiser features Mix 106.5’s very own deejay Jojo Girard, with musicians like The Kelly Bell Band, a popular blues band, as well as comedians like Tony Woods, Ian Salmon and Sarah Newell presenting a diverse range of humorous standup.
